College Punting Try-Out Tips
- Don't believe that just
by punting far that you'll make the team. If a special teams coach has any clue,
he'll be looking for punting fundamentals and overall athletic ability.
- Coaches will be looking
at a consistent ability to drop the ball, leg swing, "explosion"
during contact of the ball, and follow through.
- Consistency of the
punts overall (can they count on you to make that pressure punt out of the
endzone?)
- The ability to
"directional" punt (angling a punt toward either side of the field is
something that will set you apart from the other punters.
- Hang time is also
important as long as you can consistently do it (4 out of 6 punts).
- Ability to catch a snap
from center (college snappers at your level tend to have a little bit better
speed on the ball!)
If
you're not already, consider learning to be a holder for extra points and field
goals. This again will set you apart from the other punters. |
