Try-Out Tips for Arena League Kickers

#1: in a tryout that i'm going to for an arena team asks to bring two types of cleats... 1) grass cleat ---already have that one 2) turf shoe ----that's what i'm wondering about

do they want a shoe with no cleats on the bottom or would they rather a shoe with no cleats on the bottom..kind of like an adidas sambe with a flat bottom...just wondering if you could help me on this matter great cd...thanks

#2: do you have any advice on how i should "carry myself" at the tryout...i wanna be confident but not to cocky.....i wanna get along with a the new coaches and other players....thanks for any advice...kinda nervous about it thanks _______________________________________ #1: Great question!

Most indoor arena turf is much like indoor/outdoor carpet, with a little more padding underneath. My experience has been the regular grass cleats work fair, but tend to slip when you're foot is at an angle. The "shoe" type bottom works great, but can be a little heavy on the foot if you have to do any running.

So, assuming that you're only going to try out for kicking, I suggest two ideas to think about:

- wear the addidas flat bottoms on both feet for the best grip - wear the addidas flat bottom on your plant foot, your regular kicking shoe on the other

In any case, make an effort to try and find similar type turf and try the shoes/combo out BEFORE the try out. You'll feel much more comfortable!

Also, if there's any paint (including the yard lines) try out your plant foot on it - painted areas tend to be a little more slick than the regular turf.

#2: As I discuss in my upcoming eBook on "Making the Team", consider the following:

- It is your time to show off. This doesn't mean you have to be "cocky" from the time you get there until you leave. It means when the time comes when all the kickers are out on the field getting ready/warming up, you go through your normal warm-ups FULL OF CONFIDENCE and pretend like you're going to nail every kick. Carry this attitude until you finish your try-out, and then be humble in victory!

- The best way to overcome nervousness, is being secure and confident in yourself and your kicking abilities. That means lots of perfect practice in as many different situations as you can think of!
